World Cup Qualification Rules

The 2026 World Cup expands to 48 teams across 12 groups. Top-two finishes, points, goal difference and discipline can all shape the World Cup route to the knockouts.

Each World Cup team plays three matches in a single round-robin group. Group matches can end in a draw.

The 12 World Cup groups produce 24 direct qualifiers.

The 12 third-place teams are compared, and the best eight enter the Round of 32.

World Cup knockouts

Round of 32, single elimination

If a World Cup knockout is tied after 90 minutes, extra time is played, followed by penalties if needed.
